Burger toppings final straw

Police are looking for a hotheaded Icy Delights customer.

The man became so enraged over some lettuce and tomato on a hamburger on Saturday that he stormed out of the restaurant on Markdale's Main St. and slammed the door so hard that it broke the glass in it, Grey County OPP said in a news release yesterday.

Police said the "act of lettuce rage" occurred during a busy lunch hour.

"A man had come into the restaurant and ordered three burgers to go. He indicated he didn't want lettuce or tomato on one, but the busy cook inadvertently forgot. When the man complained, the cook immediately removed the lettuce but that remedy didn't seem to satisfy the man. He threw the burger across the restaurant and slammed the door so hard on the way out he broke the thick . . . glass pane," the news release said.

Bill Netthews, whose wife owns the eatery, said yesterday that the man did pay for the hamburgers, but "just lost it and stormed out" over the condiments on one.

The man, described as 18 to 20 years old, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall and wearing a ball cap and dark hoodie, took the other two burgers with him, Netthews said.

The broken glass panel was five-sixteenths of an inch thick and about three feet by five feet, he said. Netthews did not know how much it would cost to replace, but figured the couple would be out "a couple of hundred dollars anyway" because their insurance policy carries a $500 deductible.

OPP spokesman Const. Steve Starr said it is believed the man is local and would be identified soon, but that anyone who could help police find him should call the Grey County OPP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
